New Orleans Saints are just two games away from making NFL history for the second straight year, but you will not find too many long faces in the streets of the Big Easy. That’s because the city is experiencing the anticipation and excitement of what was known as “the greatest free show on Earth”: Mardi gras. There are only three weeks between now and Tuesday fat, to continue preparations for the 312-year tradition on track.

It would be difficult to overestimate the amount of planning to enter the party, while more than 60 parades are scheduled to run through the Greater New Orleans in the months ahead, many of which take place simultaneously. They range from the French Quarter walking teams like Pete Fountain’s Half-Fast Walking Club famous (including actor John Goodman is a member) to “super brotherhoods” as Orpheus, whose fleet adorned cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and take months to build.

A notable exception to all the preparations in the city is the Superdome, home of the Saints. Its doors are closed for the carnival while receiving a facelift in anticipation of hosting Super Bowl XLVII in 2013. This means that the Krewe of Endymion, which holds its annual ball extravaganza within the walls around the sacred feast to move temporarily to the Morial Convention Center. Found among the members of the brotherhood Endymion celebrities this year will be Anderson Cooper, Kelly Ripa and Pat Benatar, who all serve as royalty.

Mardi Gras local historian and author Arthur Hardy said: “Nobody in New Orleans have mind a repeat of last year’s Super Bowl win, but we’re all still looking for a record season of Carnival.”
