Campbell Brown

May 19, 2010 by · Comments Off on Campbell Brown

Campbell BrownCampbell Brown:To compound the problems of the CNN audience, the prime time anchor Campbell Brown said on Wednesday it was leaving the cable news channel.

Brown said it was his decision to leave, and that she would remain the anchor of 20:00 hours on CNN during the “transition.”

In a lengthy statement and sincere, she wrote: “In short, assessments of my program is not where I want to be.”

To be clear: this is my decision, and one that I’ve been thinking for some time. As to why I might have said, I’m going down to spend more time for my kids (which I really want to do). Or I’m going to pursue other opportunities (which I also really want to do). But I never had much tolerance for businesses of others, so I can not imagine trying to stomach my own. The simple fact is that not enough people want to see my program, and I owe it to myself and get out of the way CNN for the CNN can try something else.

CNN will have to find out what that is. 20:00 time in the world of cable news is currently driven by the indomitable Bill O’Reilly, Nancy Grace and Keith Olbermann. Shedding my skin to try journalism own living personality type that can coexist in that line is simply impossible for me. Not that I am or I want to be is not that CNN asked me at any time. This is the right decision for me and I hope it will be a great opportunity for CNN.

Ms. Brown’s full statement is reproduced at the end of this post.

In a statement, CNN / USA president Jonathan Klein did not give any indication of what program or what the host would take care of time slot Ms. Brown.

“Today is about Campbell,” he said in a statement. “We wish her well as she begins the next phase of his life. We respect your decision to leave. We will announce our plans for programming in the coming weeks.”

Ms. Brown asked to be released from his contract early CNN, according to two people with knowledge of the contractual situation. He met with his staff to talk about his departure Tuesday afternoon, and strengthen its program on Tuesday night.

She is not expected to immediately jump to another network, a person with knowledge of the situation. It requested anonymity because, at the time, none of the directors had made comments on the record.

Their departure was first reported by Web site Mediaite.

Ms. Brown was undoubtedly the anchor in the groove of the toughest time on cable news, eight this morning, while Bill O’Reilly of Fox News Channel and Keith Olbermann of MSNBC to go head to head. Compared with these programs to the public, the news program was largely an afterthought, at least in the indices of all nights with matches.

Scores of The Nielsen Company shows that “Campbell Brown” has attracted an average of 591,000 viewers so far this year, while “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” has averaged 1.03 million and “O’Reilly Factor” has an average of 3.34 million. Nancy Grace, who hosts a talk show style tabloid crime and justice in HLN sister channel of CNN at that hour, also regularly Outrata Ms. Brown, with an average of 724,000 viewers so far this year.

On some days, Ms. Brown scores are substantially lower – drew 353 000 viewers on Monday night.

The scores from year to year have been particularly hard to Ms. Brown and CNN as a whole. Comparing 2010 to date with the same period in 2009, the hearing of Ms. Brown has declined by 38 percent. public throughout the day CNN has fallen by 31 percent.

Despite heavy losses, CNN executives have said they are committed to a strategy of factual information.

In a presentation to advertisers last month, CNN / US president Jonathan Klein said: “We will never abandon our faith in being the core of the only independent cable network in this country.”

Ms. Brown was hired away from NBC in early 2008. At that time, she was a host of “Weekend Today.” (She won the attention of aggressive interviewing style and a slogan: “No bias, no bull,” the CNN temporarily used as the name of your program.)

No matter the name, is essentially a non-partisan news program, and that’s a format that has fallen out of favor with viewers, who apparently prefer the supporters of Fox and MSNBC (and the killing and the lack of people’s stories HLN.)

Ms. Brown is married to Dan Senor, a private equity executive and former military adviser to President George W. Bush, who is considering a run for the Senate this year, prompting questions about whether he or she could stay on television if he ran. But in March, Mr. Lord decided against it.

In November, CNN lost another major anchor, Lou Dobbs, who abruptly resigned his seven-hour program in the middle of the week. It took the channel over two months to prepare a new permanent program in place.

Ms. Brown’s full statement:

I knew the day I accepted my job at CNN that a victory ratings at 8 pm would be a formidable challenge. As I have said time and again, this is the hardest schedule in cable news. This is obviously due to the incredible talents of my competitors 20:00. I have also always amazed every time a TV presenter, says he or she does not pay attention to ratings. I’m pretty sure the last time I honestly could not ignore the anchor scores was long before I was born. Of course I pay attention to ratings. And in short, my program ratings are not where I want to be. It is largely for this reason that I am stepping down as anchor of CNN Campbell Brown. ”

Since its introduction three decades ago, CNN has striven to be an independent, credible and sustainable in the news. While the rest of the cable news world moved to the opinion, CNN allowed me to stay true to my roots of hard news and supported me with a true commitment to journalism of the old school. There are a lot of debate on whether the real journalism, even has a place in primetime. It allows me to be myself out of this debate for a night, but I’m really proud of the work we have done on this program and I still believe that journalism has a vital place in primetime and at all times. I’m also particularly proud of the people who put this show on the air every night. They are an incredible team of dedicated, loyal and supportive. For them, I will be forever grateful.

My plan right now is to help the CNN through any transition, and then to enjoy, for the first time, the nightly ritual of “Goodnight Moon” and kisses her good night with my two small children. I wish my colleagues at CNN all the best. And as bedtime because it does not conflict with the prime time, I’ll be watching TV and pulling them.
