But Holmgren recalled his 17 years on the bench and back Mangini for the 2010 season because he felt Mangini needs more than a year to prove him. Mangini was fired Monday morning after a meeting with Holmgren. Emphasizing a team-first, Leslie Frazier took as head coach of Minnesota and has promised a thorough review of the list, the staff and the speed of both sides of the ball for the return of the Vikings in the playoffs. The day he reached a contract with the organization to remove the interim label from his title, Frazier said he believes “it’s only a matter of time” before the championship franchise wins the private Super Bowl.

Frazier took over Nov. 22 when Brad Childress was fired, and the Vikings 3-3 in the 51-year-old after starting 3-7. “I think we will be able to revisit the past six weeks and say, ‘You know what, that was the beginning of something special,” Frazier said Monday during his introductory news conference at Winter Park. One of the first orders of business for Frazier is to help develop a plan with the personnel department for the largest item of the sport. Quarterback Brett Favre is finally retiring and Frazier said he did not call the 41 years to ask for another season under “any circumstances.”

Employment Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio is safe for another year. His role as the defensive play calling is more, though. Team owner Wayne Weaver spoke with about 10 players Monday then had a lengthy meeting with Del Rio. Del Rio explained what happened this season and has submitted a plan to fix things. Weaver responded by asking Del Rio to relinquish control of the defense.

Weaver also said Del Rio needs to make the playoffs in 2011 to keep his job. “If we are not in the playoffs, it’s pretty clear that we will have a different coach,” said Weaver. Tight end Marced Lewis said that players are taking up the challenge Weaver. “Pressure bursts pipes or is diamonds,” Lewis said. “We will make diamonds. We’re heading in the right direction. We almost made the playoffs this year. We know how close we are. We know we can. ”
