Did Magellan Complete His Voyage?

August 31, 2012 by · Comments Off on Did Magellan Complete His Voyage?

Did Magellan Complete His Voyage?, Ferdinand Magellan never completed the voyage but was killed in the Philippines in 1521. Navigator Juan Sebastian Elcarno and some 22 survivors reached Spain in 1522 to finish the circumnavigation of the globe.

Ferdinand Magellan (1480 – 27 April 1521) was a Portuguese explorer. He was born in Sabrosa, in northern Portugal, and served King Charles I of Spain in search of a westward route to the “Spice Islands” (modern Maluku Islands in Indonesia).

Magellan’s expedition of 1519-1522 became the first expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean (then named “peaceful sea” by Magellan; the passage being made via the Strait of Magellan), and the first to cross the Pacific. It also completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth, although Magellan himself did not complete the entire voyage, being killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines. (For background see Exploration of the Pacific.)

Magellan also gives his name to the Magellanic Penguin, which he was the first European to note, the Magellanic clouds, now known to be nearby dwarf galaxies, the twin lunar craters of Magelhaens and Magelhaens A, and the Martian crater of Magelhaens.

Miami Grand Prix Sailing, The Miami Super Boat Grand Prix 22nd edition, presented by Super Boat International, was the third race of the season. The 6.5-mile course ran between 8th and 44th Streets along South Beach which is also nicknamed SoBe.

Thirteen race boats hit the throttles on 15th July at 1pm and by 2pm, after the Super Boats raced 13 laps totaling 82+ miles, the results were in! The 77 Lucas Oil MAVTV was not only the first in the Super Boat Extreme class, but also the first V-hull across the finish line taking second overall, trailing the Norwegian Supercat Unlimited number 8 MTI 50′ powered by twin Mercury 1350 turbo engines and driven by Tor Staubo and throttled by Johnny Tomlinson.

The 77 Lucas Oil MAVTV SilverHook 48GP ran flawlessly once again consuming the confused 2 to 4 foot seas with aplomb. ‘Since the Key West finals, the SilverHook has continued its uncontested success’ expressed driver Michael Silfverberg thanking the team for all their hard work.

‘This marks another notch in the belt for the SilverHook 48GP’, announced throttleman Nigel Hook. ‘My partner, Michael Silfverberg, and I built this prototype to become the ultimate mono hull brand. We are so ecstatic with the results that we are planning to build two SilverHook boats to sell to the public next year. Either the 48GP (race) or 48GT (pleasure version) will be available and we are now starting to consider qualified buyers.’ Hook went on adding he was chuffed with the compliment from John Kenyon, former APBA Commissioner stating: ‘I have been at the center of offshore racing since the early 1970s and this SilverHook is the most outrageous looking boat I have seen, and it runs as outrageous as it looks!’

At the last race, the 77 Lucas Oil MAVTV SilverHook 48GP added a new name to the roster of sponsors: LifeProof – the best action case for your iPhone or iPad. Additionally, the team has entered into closer relationship with Race Technology and added technical guru Kieran Ironmonger as a valued member of the team. Being able to run analytics across all the data we collect has enabled the rapid optimization of the new SilverHook – the new design was in a computer less than 20 months ago. SilverHook is synchronizing four cameras with the data off both engines along with GPS and accelerometer feeds to analyze post race.

The names on the list were lifted from Twitter’s trending #uglybabynames hashtag, so they’re not objectively ugly names per se, they’re just what The Internet decided was ugly that particular day. Babble rounded them up, arranged them alphabetically, and now we present you with a nice list of first names that could get your kid beat up at recess.

Driver Hits 11 People, A 100-year-old man backed his car on to a sidewalk and hit 11 people, including nine children, across from an elementary school in South Los Angeles just after classes had ended Wednesday, authorities said. Four of the children were in critical condition when firefighters arrived but they were stabilized and were in serious condition at a hospital, city fire Capt. Jaime Moore said. Everyone was expected to survive, he said.

The powder blue Cadillac backed slowly into the group of parents and children buying snacks from a sidewalk vendor, and the crowd banged on his windows and screamed for him to stop, but not before some of the children were trapped under the car, witnesses said.

Children’s backpacks, shoes, candy and loose change were strewn about the scene behind a discount grocery store across from Main Street Elementary.

Police identified the driver as Preston Carter and said he was being very cooperative.

Carter talked to television reporters after the crash some five miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles. He said he has a driver’s license and will be 101 years old Sept. 5.

“My brakes failed. It was out of control,” Carter told KCAL-TV.
