Nehru Stadium, New Delhi, September 21 – In another blow to the Indian Community Games (GTC) preparations, a foot overbridge being built near the main stage of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium collapsed on Tuesday, injuring 23 workers, five of them seriously.

“The workers are injured on the overbridge near which they were working collapsed,” an official told IANS from the police after the accident, just 10 days before the Games begin.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H.G.S. Dhaliwal told reporters at the scene that 23 workers were injured, five of them seriously.

“Part of the overbridge gave in. It is on the main road, but is part of the lot,” said Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta a TV channel.

Mehta said the bridge would be completed within the next 10 days.

Most of the injured were taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre. Some were taken to the nearby Safdarjung Hospital.

The opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, the biggest sporting event to be based in India since the Asian Games 1982 Games to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Oct. 3. The stadium, the showpiece event, will also host the closing ceremony.

The accident occurs on a day of Federation Commonwealth Games (CGF) president Michael Fennell said parts of the town were still not suitable for housing.

Have also been raised by the New Zealand contingent and Scotland.
