Evgeni Nabokov

January 22, 2011 by

Evgeni Nabokov, (CP) – New York Islanders get much needed aid into the net, pulling the goalie Evgeni Nabokov away from Detroit a few days after signing to play in Hockeytown.

The Islanders said Saturday that they have sought the exemption of 35 years out of Nabokov the Red Wings, who signed a one-year contract Thursday.

Nabokov has spent this season with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL and the Russian Federation had not yet played for Detroit.

Approval of the NHL collective bargaining states that anyone who plays in a professional league before signing an NHL contract must clearly exceptions.

The Islanders have struggled in goal because of injuries to Rick DiPietro and trade Dwayne Roloson to Tampa Bay this month.

The New York Islanders made a request goalie ‘Evgeni Nabokov,”ending the Red Wings’ attempts to acquire him.

The Wings have agreed to a one-year deal and 570,000 Nabokov Thursday night in hopes of adding the out-of-work veteran to their lineup decimated. But because he had to go on waivers to return to the NHL, the Wings will risk losing him to another team, as it happened.

“We tried something and it has been claimed by another team,” general manager Ken Holland said. “We’ll go. It is the nature of rules and the league.”

Contrary to speculation that a team claiming a player can turn around and trade him to the team who originally wanted the player, it’s not so easy. Holland said the Islanders would have to put Nabokov on waivers, giving another team that could have put in a claim for him first dibs. It is unclear if another team has put in a claim (the team ranked last in the ranking it gets). Asked if the chances of further Nabokov, Holland replied, “yes.”

Nabokov, 35, began to play the season in the Kontinental Hockey League for SKA St. Petersburg, but left for family reasons after playing in 22 games.

The Wings have seen that any potential insurance backup Chris Osgood is recovering from sports hernia surgery. It should not return until late February and early March.

Jordan Pearce was called back to Jimmy Howard for today’s game against the Blackhawks, because if the Wings had won Nabokov, Pearce could be returned to the minors without being exposed to waivers. Holland said he expects the team will be sent Pearce back from today and remind veteran Joey MacDonald of the Griffins. MacDonald filled in for Osgood goes 1-2 with a percentage of 0, 903 and 2.53 goals against average this season.
