Miss World 2013, The 2013 Miss World pageant has been won by Miss Philippines, Megan Young, on the Indonesian island of Bali.

US-born Ms Young, 23, beat 126 other contestants and pledged to be “the best Miss World ever”.

The competition was moved to Bali from the capital, Jakarta, because of protests from hardline Muslim groups.

Security for Saturday’s event was high in Bali, a resort island with a majority Hindu population, but no further demonstrations were reported.

Miss France, Marine Lorphelin, came second in the contest and Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, took third place.

Wearing a glittering gown, Ms Young, who moved to the Philippines at the age of 10, wept as the Miss World sash was put over her shoulder by 2012 winner Miss China.

She told the cheering crowd in Nusa Dua in southern Bali she would “be myself in everything I do, to share what I know and to educate people”.

Heavily armed police patrolled the event in southern Bali
Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim country and the organisers had originally offered to abandon the contest’s bikini round in an attempt to address complaints of pornography and immorality

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Airplane, In New Ad NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has decided to reprise his role as Roger Murdock in the 80s comedy ‘Airplane!’ for a set of commercials.

The commercials are for the Wisconsin Department of Tourism and Kareem is joined by former co-star Robert Hayes, who played Ted Striker in the original film.

McKittrick Canyon Autumn

McKittrick Canyon Autumn, Meetup at Walmart at Quaker & South Loop 289 just east of the fuel pumps.
Clarification: We are not hiking to the campground and this is not a “backpacking” trip.

McKittrick Canyon: a 7 mile hike during the autumn season change to view the maples as they change colors. This is an intermediate hike because of length. There are not steep climbs.

Camping at Pine Springs

Hike to Guadalupe Peak: an 8.4 miles long trek to the highest point in Texas.

This is an overnight trip and you must have attended one of our previous events in order to participate in this meetup.

We will depart on Saturday from our rendezvous point at the Walmart at Quaker and South Loop 289 at 7:00 am. The drive to Guadalupe Mountains National Park takes about 3 1/2 hours. Because of the time change, we will arrive around 9:30 am.

McKittrick Canyon
We will then hike in McKittrick Canyon to the Pratt cabin and continue on to the Hunter’s cabin. Here there is a picnic area where we can enjoy lunch. The out and back hike is about 7 miles long, perhaps 8 miles with the continuation to Hunter’s cabin. The hike does not have any steep climbs and because we will be taking our time to enjoy the fall foliage, we will probably spend 5 or 6 hours hiking.

Camping at Pine Springs

This is the main campground at the park. There are restrooms here, but there are no showers. There are hotels in White City and Carlsbad, but because of the oil industry, the prices are often very high and the less expensive motels can be real dumps. There is an $8 camping fee, but I’m not certain if that is per person or per campsite.

Hike to Guadalupe Peak
This is a strenuous hike to the highest point in Texas. We will start up on Sunday morning after we get all of our camping gear packed up. If someone in our groups doesn’t feel up to this hike, they can go over to Frijoles Ranch where there are several springs and a shorter hiking trail.

Hiking to the peak and back will probably take about 6 hours.

After we complete our hike to Guadalupe Peak, we will return to Lubbock. It will likely be after dark when we return.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park is in the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas and contains Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas at 8,749 feet (2,666.7 m) in elevation. Located east of El Paso, it also contains El Capitan, long used as a landmark by people traveling along the old route later followed by the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach line. Visitors can see the ruins of an old stagecoach station near the Pine Springs Visitor Center. Camping is available nearby at the Pine Springs Campground. The restored Frijole Ranch House is now a small museum of local ranching history and is the trailhead for Smith Spring. The park covers 86,367 acres (134.95 sq mi; 349.51 km2) and is in the same mountain range as Carlsbad Caverns National Park which is located about 25 miles (40 km) to the north in New Mexico. Numerous well-established trails exist in the park for hiking and horse-riding. The Guadalupe Peak Trail offers perhaps the most outstanding views in the park. Climbing over 3,000 feet (910 m) to the summit of Guadalupe Peak, the trail winds through pinyon pine and Douglas-fir forests and offers spectacular views of El Capitan and the vast Chihuahuan Desert.

The park also contains McKittrick Canyon. During the Fall, McKittrick comes alive with a blaze of color from the turning Bigtooth Maples, in stark contrast with the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert. A trail in the canyon leads to a stone cabin built in the early 1930s, formerly the vacation home of Wallace Pratt, a petroleum geologist who donated the land in order to establish the park.
