Bronx Zoo Accident, The site of Sunday’s Bronx River Parkway accident that killed 7 was listed as one of the state’s most most-accident prone stretches of road last year.

The stretch was listed in the federally mandated “5 Percent” report filed by the state Department of Transportation, giving the top 5 percent of roads with the highest rate of serious accidents. The report noted that the area from the accident scene at the Bronx Zoo, and five miles south to the Cross Bronx Expressway, needed $8 million in repairs to eliminate a hazardous limited stopping sight distance on the southbound side.

Three bridges along the stretch were to be replaced in a project to be started in 2016. Nearby southbound stretches of the Bronx River Parkway also appear on the list, including the area around Gun Hill Road to the north and 174th Street to the south. The current timetable shows it as part of a $236 million project set to start in 2022.

In Sunday’s accident, an out-of-control SUV careered across several lanes of traffic on the Bronx River Parkway, then plunged more than 50 feet into a ravine on the grounds of the Bronx Zoo, killing all seven family members aboard, authorities said.

Jennifer Hudson Family Members Murders, Prosecutors continued to build their case Monday in the trial of the man accused of killing three members of singer Jennifer Hudson’s family, calling a series of police officers who testified about finding the gun allegedly used in the slayings, and collecting other crucial evidence.

William Balfour, now 30, is accused of killing Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson; her brother, Jason Hudson; and her 7-year-old nephew Julian King on Oct. 24, 2008. Prosecutors have said Balfour, the ex-husband of Hudson’s sister Julia, killed the victims in a jealous rage, believing Julia was dating another man.

Chicago Police Officer Terrence Fowler, who was a new police recruit at the time of the killings, testified that he was assigned to a search team tasked with searching for physical evidence two days after police located Jason Hudson’s stolen SUV, where Julian King’s body was found on Oct. 27, 2008.

Police Sgt. William Svilar had earlier testified that he assigned a team of 90 police recruits to assist in the search for evidence on Oct. 29, 2008. He split them into two teams to search for evidence along a path from where the SUV was found, near 1313 S. Kolin, to the apartment building where Balfour was arrested three days before, at 1925 S. Spaulding.

Puppy On Runway

Puppy On Runway, Flights were delayed yesterday at La Guardia airport in New York as authorities tried to coax a frightened puppy off the runway. The puppy, named Byrdie, broke free of her crate as she was being loaded onto a plane and attempted to flee. “We can’t take off because there is apparently a loose dog running around on the runway,” passenger Robert Lund tweeted. “How did he get through security?”

Byrdie was being loaded onto a Delta plane when she managed to make her escape and ran out onto the runway. Planes had to immediately stop in order to avoid hitting the puppy, and airport traffic controllers were able to successfully divert traffic on the tarmac.

Port Authority’s efforts to catch the puppy were fruitless, and Byrdie’s owner, Austin Varner, was taken off her flight and driven to where the puppy was. “She was just standing there,” Varner told the New York Post. “She didn’t want to come to them, but she came right to me and we got her.”

2012 NFL Draft Analysis

April 29, 2012 by · Comments Off on 2012 NFL Draft Analysis

2012 NFL Draft Analysis, 1 – Morris Claiborne, CB, Louisiana State (5-11, 188); 3 – Tyrone Crawford, DE, Boise State (6-4, 275); 4 – Kyle Wilber, OLB, Wake Forest (6-4, 249); 4 – Matt Johnson, S, Eastern Washington (6-1, 211); 5 – Danny Coale, WR, Virginia Tech (6-0, 201); 6 – James Hanna, TE (6-4, 252); 7 – Caleb McSurdy, ILB, Montana (6-1, 245)

Top Picks Analysis: The Cowboys made one of this draft’s boldest moves by shipping their No. 14 overall pick and second-rounder to St. Louis to garner Claiborne, widely regarded as this year’s premier cover cornerback. The 2011 Thorpe Award honoree boasts the arm length to efficiently jam receivers at the line of scrimmage as well as the fluidity to mirror opponents down the field, and should instantly upgrade a secondary that was a big sore spot last season.

Dallas didn’t stop there in its quest to bolster the defense, spending its next three selections on that side of the ball. Crawford isn’t much of a pass rusher at this stage, but has the functional strength to contribute as a rotational end in Rob Ryan’s 3-4 scheme, while Wilber is a quality athlete with the movement skills to possibly take over for Anthony Spencer if the latter departs as a free agent after this season.

Best Value Pick: Hanna is a tremendous athlete who delivered the fastest 40 time of any tight end at the combine and could earn his keep as a move player that can stretch the field once he learns to be more precise in his routes.
