Tow Truck Driver Rescues Man Fire, Tow truck driver rescues man fire-A wreck on Interstate 24 that shut down traffic for hours in Rutherford County on Saturday was the scene of an amazing rescue. Tow truck driver John Murray has lots of stories about interstate wrecks, but none quite like this one.

“If you look at the Ford Escape that got hit you would say OK, that’s too bad. But when you look at the semi that hit the Escape, wow!” Murray said. The crash Saturday morning in the eastbound lanes of I-24 near Sam Ridley Parkway in Smyrna unfolded right in front of Murray.

“The truck come up in the air, landed on its side and slid 500-600 feet. It was on fire and the man was still inside,” Murray said. Murray and another driver stopped and raced to the trapped truck driver, who appeared to have a broken pelvis. “All we could think to do was get him out of the truck,” Murray said.

Murray wanted the man to kick the window instead of getting glass kicked in on him, but he couldn’t do it, so they did it for him and then carried him to safety. “We knew we had to get him out of the truck. No one would have lived through a burn like that,” Murray said. Of course Murray and the other driver risked their lives to save a stranger.
