Vitriol

Vitriol, Filming Gabrielle Giffords and Rep. of others at a neighborhood meeting in Arizona on Saturday triggered this will probably be a wrenching debate about anger and violence in American politics.
While the exact motives of the suspect in the shootings remained unclear, a website linked to the man, Jared Lee Loughner, contained anti-government rants.

And regardless of what led to the episode, he quickly attracted attention on the extent to which inflammatory statements; threats and provocations to violence implicit became a constant in the underlying political culture of nation.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik seemed to capture the mood of the day at an evening news conference when he said it was time for countries to “do some soul search.”

“It is not unusual for all public officials are constantly receiving threats, including me,” he said. “That’s the only sad thing about what is happening in America.”

After the shooting of Giffords, a Democrat, and others in a parking lot of a supermarket, the top Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner, the governor of Arizona Jan Brewer quickly condemned the violence.

“An attack against one who serves is an attack against all those who serve,” Boehner said in a statement.

The House was to vote Wednesday on the proposal of the new Republican majority to repeal the law on health care, which had excited their supporters and ignited fierce opposition movement’s Tea Party.

But Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, majority leader, said the voting and other legislative activities planned would be postponed “so that we can take the necessary measures in light of today’s tragedy.”

Health legislation stirred strong feelings that erupted at public meetings Democrats in 2007. And there was more anger and growing distrust about the government, with the speech in part fueled by talk shows and Web sites.

Tea Party activists also condemned the shooting. Judson Phillips, founder of Tea Party Nation, a social networking site for activists Tea Party, said on its website that “nobody should be abused because of their political beliefs.”

But other groups said it was difficult to separate what happened to the heated nature of debate that raged around President Barack Obama and Democratic policies. “It is fair to say – in the current political climate, and given today’s political rhetoric – which many have contributed to the construction level of vitriol in our political discourse has certainly contributed to the atmosphere which this event appeared, “said a statement by the National Jewish Democratic Council. Giffords is the first Jewish member of the House of his condition.

The votes last spring, health care, the tone against certain legislators has increased, with demonstrators outside the House of insults and slurs at some parliamentarians.

The offices of some Democrats, including that of Giffords in Tucson, were vandalized.

Giffords has also been among a group of candidates embattled Democratic House have been presented on the site committee of Sarah Palin, the political action with crosses on their districts, which Giffords disturbed at the time. “We are on the targeted list of Sarah Palin,” Giffords said in March. “But the thing is how she has painted the crosshairs of a sight on our district. When people do, they realize there are consequences to that. ”

The image of the gun sites no longer on the website of Palin, issued a statement saying, “My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Representative Gabrielle Giffords and other victims of the tragic shooting today Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice. ”

The Democrats also highlighted cases where the Republican candidates seem to raise the prospect of an armed revolt if Washington did not change his habits.

But many Republicans have noted that they too are subject to regular threats and abuse from the public and during the struggle for health care, some have suggested that Democrats have tried to cut off political opposition and present themselves as victims.

Sensitive to the issue, tea party activists said they quickly reviewed their lists of members when Loughner was identified as a suspect to see if it has been associated with them. They said they found no evidence that he was.

Tea party activists in Tucson had disagreed strongly with Giffords, especially as the debate on health care took place, it eventually supported the measure. They have staged several demonstrations outside his office. DeAnn But Hatch, co-founder of Tucson Tea Party, said: “I want to strongly, strongly that we absolutely not advocating violence.” And co-founder Trent Humphries said his group was being threatened.

Other Tea Party activists said it would be difficult to separate the shot of the current ideological confrontation.

“At a time like this, it is terrible that we must think about politics, but no matter what the motivations were the shooter, the left will blame the movement Tea Party,” said Mr. Phillips its website.

“While we must take a moment to express our sympathy to the families of those who died, we can not let the hard drive have to do what it tried to do in 1995 after the Oklahoma City bombing he writes. “Across the political spectrum, there are extremists on both left and right. Violence of this nature should be condemned by all and not used for political purposes. “
