Pink Uniforms, The Omaha (Neb.) Burke High girls basketball team got a technical Monday night for wearing pink and it has a lot of people seeing red. The Bulldogs wore pink against visiting Columbus to support a Make-A-Wish fundraiser.
With Burke leading by a point at halftime, Columbus coach Dave Licari brought up a state rule with the referees about home teams needing to wear white. The refs then assessed a technical against the Bulldogs.
In the end the visitors won 62-47 but that didn’t soothe some who saw the act as a horrible example of sportsmanship.
Burke AD Kyle Rohrig took the hit upon himself telling Mike Patterson of the World-Herald that “We had good intentions, but we made a mistake, and then there were consequences.”
Columbus AD John Krogstrand was the person who brought he uniform situation to his coach but said “it was a situation where we just asked the officials, and they called the foul….But when you want to maintain the integrity of the game, you’ve got to play by the rules.”
