YMCA, Indianola took a step Friday toward its goal of building a community recreation center.

Facilities Planning wellness Indianola Committee received a joint proposal from the YMCA of Greater Des Moines and Summercrest Hills Development Corp. to build a plant of 55 000 square feet in the development of 160 acres Summercrest Hills on the north side of town.

The project cost $ 12.2 million, and including 300,000 to purchase six acres of hills Summercrest.

The town of Indianola would own fitness center, which would be operated by the YMCA of Greater Des Moines. Under the proposal, the YMCA facilities provide an estimated cost of $ 400,000 to $ 500,000, and pay annual operating costs of membership fees.

Public officials will evaluate and refine the proposal in the coming weeks and present the plan to the public Dec. 13 at City Hall.
The initial construction could begin late fall 2011.
