Adam Sandler, A day after the Oscars claimed to highlight 2011’s best movies, Adam Sandler has received a record-breaking 11 nominations for the annual Razzie awards, which aim to recognise the year’s poorest performances in film.

Sandler’s haul is more than double the previous individual record of five nods held by Eddie Murphy for his 2007 film Norbit, a fairly staggering indictment. Most of the nominations are for the US comic’s film Jack and Jill, in which he plays a successful advertising executive whose irritating twin sister arrives for Thanksgiving. The comedy, which itself has 12 nods, will duke it out with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, which has eight nominations. Sandler himself is up for both worst actor and worst actress, worst screenplay and worst ensemble for Jack and Jill. With his production company Lucky Madison having released three films in 2011, he also has nods for screenwriting and producing efforts on Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star and Just Go With It.

Jack and Jill and Twilight are both nominated for worst picture, alongside New Year’s Eve, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star. Sandler appears to be the frontrunner for worst actor, although he faces stiff competition from Twilight’s Taylor Lautner, Drive Angry’s Nicolas Cage, Bucky Larson’s Nick Swardson and British nominee Russell Brand, for Arthur. For best actress, Sandler is up against Martin Lawrence for Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, Twilight’s Kristen Stewart, Sarah Jessica Parker for I Don’t Know How She Does It and New Year’s Eve, and Sarah Palin for fawning documentary Sarah Palin: The Undefeated.

Other notable nominees include Oscar-winner Al Pacino for best supporting actor, playing a version of himself who falls in love with Adam Sandler’s Jill in Jack and Jill. The not-so coveted worst director prize will go to either Michael Bay (Transformers: Dark Of The Moon), Tom Brady (Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star), Bill Condon (Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1), Dennis Dugan (Jack and Jill, Just Go With It) or Garry Marshall (New Year’s Eve).

Adam Sandler’s Turkey Song, Adam Sandler may still be smarting from the critical panning that his latest flick ‘Jack and Jill’ received, but the Hollywood star will certainly be in demand this week when America celebrates Thanksgiving.

With the big opening of Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1, Sandler’s latest comedy about a man who dreads the yearly festive visit of his needy twin sister, got left behind. It was the first film in years to register a score of zero on reviews aggregating website Rotten Tomatoes, with critic Mary F Pols writing in Time magazine, “More than 24 hours has passed since I watched the new Adam Sandler movie Jack and Jill and I am still dead inside”. However, at least the actor can rest safe in the knowledge that millions will be listening to his music come Thanksgiving on Thursday (24 November 2011). The actor’s comical Thanksgiving Song, first composed over 10 years ago, has become somewhat of a tradition amongst Americans. Adam first sang the tune in front of a live audience on Saturday Night Live, but the song soon went viral and delighted fans with its comical tale of turkey – the lyrics include, “Love to eat turkey, Cause it’s good, Love to eat turkey, Like a good boy should, Cause it’s turkey to eat, So good, Turkey for me, Turkey for you, Let’s eat the turkey, In my big brown shoe, Love to eat the turkey, At the table, I once saw a movie, With Betty Grable, Eat that turkey, All night long”.

The Thanksgiving Song is a predecessor to Sandler’s more popular holiday ditty, “The Chanukah Song”.
