Jim Nabors:(WIREUPDATE) – One of the most celebrated traditions of the Indy 500 is the song “Back Home Again in Indiana.” The song of the last 30 years has been sung by actor / singer Jim Nabors.

The tradition of singing “Back Home Again in Indiana”, began in 1946 and has been an annual tradition ever since. The song is always done after “The Star-Spangled Banner”, the Invocation, and play “Taps.” At the end of the song usually a large group of balloons are released.

Jim Nabors is best known for playing the role of Gomer Pyle in The Andy Griffith Show. ” According to a 2008 article on ESPN.com Nabors thought was to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” the first time I was invited to participate in the Indy 500 pre-race festivities. A gang leader then said that he would be singing the Indy 500 from another song.

“I said, ‘Well, I think I know part of it,” said Nabors. “I wrote the song so that it would ruin everything – I wrote it in my hand.”
