The U.S. Senate has unanimously passed a bill that would ban TikTok

December 15, 2022 by

The U.S. Senate has unanimously passed a bill that would ban TikTok, the social media app owned by Chinese company ByteDance, from being installed on government-issued devices. The move comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and China over a range of issues, including the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and Beijing’s crackdown on Hong Kong.

TikTok has come under fire in recent months for its handling of user data and alleged censorship of content deemed to be critical of the Chinese government. The app has also been accused of being a national security risk, due to its ties to China.

The bill still needs to be passed by the House of Representatives and signed into law by President Trump before it can take effect.
