Worlds Ugliest Woman Faces Up To Online Bullies Kickstarter, “DO everyone a favour and just kill yourself.” This was one of the hundreds of cutting, hateful comments that Lizzie Velasquez, a girl born with a rare physical syndrome, had to read when she found a YouTube video of herself that went viral owing to the way she looked.
Lizzie, near skeletal in appearance, is only one of three people in the world to possess the extremely rare, unnamed syndrome that prevents her from gaining weight and is also blind in one eye. Comments to the clip were thick with hate and hurt resulting in her attracting the nickname “ugliest woman in the world”.
Lizzie, now 25, had to bear such abuse at only 17 but her strong constitution prevailed by turning the negative criticism into notoriety and using this as a stage to help inspire others who suffer from physical conditions.
She has graced television, written three self-help books, is a motivational speaker (her Ted talk has been watched nearly nine million times) and now is starring in a film about her life, the unbelievable online abuse she endured and how she turned it all around into an inspirational feat of adversity.
The film, called The Lizzie Project, is a Kickstarter campaign with the mission to inspire a more positive online world. It has a goal of US$180,000 and has already been reached ($200,000 with three days to go) backed by over three thousand people.
Lizzie has a dream to make the online community a more positive place than when she found it. Or, rather, when it found her and we hope the film hits home.
