Halloween Costumes 2013, What are the most popular Halloween costumes of 2013? Whether trick-or-treating or twerking at a party, many fans of the October holiday no longer stick to dressing up as traditional monsters, witches and vampires. Come on, “Twilight” is so last year.

According to Google Shopping data, users are searching for topical costumes based on popular songs, TV shows and movies. The 10 hottest Halloween costume ideas include “The Fox” (based on Ylvis’ viral video hit “What does the Fox say?”), “Breaking Bad” (Walter White or Heisenberg), “Duck Dynasty,” the Minions from “Despicable Me 2,” Batman, Daft Punk, Daenerys (from “Game of Thrones”) and flapper-inspired dresses from “The Great Gatsby.”

2013’s trendiest outfit, however, is based on Miley Cyrus’ recent MTV Video Music Awards performance and her increasingly outrageous behavior. Amazon is selling a “Miley Cyrus Twerk Foam Finger” and a Robin Thicke suit (which is essentially “Beetlejuice” without the mask), plus a ball and chain for anyone who wants to recreate the former “Hannah Montana” star’s “Wrecking Ball” music video.

Locally, the manager at the Spirit Halloween store in Cicero said this year’s most popular items are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the kids and “The Walking Dead” costumes for adults.

At Destiny USA, a Hot Topic employee said superheroes are bigger than ever, pointing to Batman, Iron Man, Captain America and Superman outfits for both men and women. Staffers at Spencer Gifts said the hottest costumes are all based on TV shows, such as “The Walking Dead” and “Sons of Anarchy.”

Employees at Party City locations in Central New York said they couldn’t speak on behalf of the chain as to which products were selling the most. Boom Babies on Westcott Street near Syracuse University said it has reduced its focus on Halloween costumes to highlight formal wear options like prom dresses.

For those looking to get more creative with their costumes, though, AL.com has a few Internet meme-inspired ideas. Besides Cyrus, try dressing up as Flo from Progressive Insurance, making a “sweet comeback” as a giant Twinkie, putting on cat ears and a frown to be Grumpy Cat, or combine sharks and tornadoes to recreate “Sharknado” with stuffed animal sharks with swirling spiderwebs.

Dougherty’s Masquerade, located inside Shoppingtown Mall, let entertainment reporters Geoff Herbert and Katrina Tulloch try on a few costumes to see what might be the best looks this year.
