School Shooting In Newtown, Conn., A year after the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn., bells tolled across the town at 9:30 a.m. Saturday as the small community planned a day of quiet reflection with private memorial services.

The bells rang 26 times as names of each of the victims were read at St. Rose of Lima church in Newtown, one of several houses of worship that was holding private services Saturday for a community still grieving for the 20 children and six educators killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

President Obama, in his weekly address Saturday, asked Americans to consider their role in preventing future violence.

Obama said the country has not done enough to make communities safer since the tragedy . Parents of children killed in the tragedy lent their voices to efforts to prevent such violence from happening again but the nation must try harder to stop violence, he said.

School Shooting In Newtown, Conn., The Connecticut town of Newtown asked for privacy during the upcoming anniversary of the school shooting that killed 20 children and six staffers.

The officials also joined victims’ families Monday in calling for people to mark the date of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting by performing acts of kindness or volunteering with charities.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, killed his mother inside their Newtown home before driving to the school where he carried out his rampage. He killed himself as police arrived.

One of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history, the Newtown attack stoked debate — and fuelled divisions — over gun control. President Barack Obama failed to push through federal legislation to tighten gun laws, including expanded background checks for gun purchases and a ban on military-style assault rifles. Some states, including Connecticut, passed their own tougher laws after the massacre.

Relatives of more than half the 26 victims said at a news conference that they planned to light a candle on Friday night in honour of their lost loved ones. They also urged people thinking of the victims to find ways to give back to their own communities.

“In this way, we hope that some small measure of good may be returned to the world,” said JoAnn Bacon, whose 6-year-old daughter, Charlotte, was among the 20 students and six educators shot to death in the school on Dec. 14, 2012. She was reading from a statement released by the families of all 26 victims.

The town has no formal events planned for Saturday, and officials have discouraged the news media from coming to Newtown.

“We are trying to respect the world’s interest in us, but we also have a real need in our community to gain a foothold,” First Selectman Pat Llodra said.

The families also announced they have set up a new website — http://mysandyhookfamily.org — where each family can share information on how they are honouring victims.
