Rainbow Crossing, A permanent “rainbow crossing” will return to Sydney, the minister who ripped up the last one says.

But the new “rainbow crossing” doesn’t cross a road and it won’t be painted in the usual colours.

Instead a permanent outline of a rainbow will be painted in Summer Hill Square by Ashfield Council.

The colours of the rainbow can, however, be “periodically chalked in,” NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay said.

Mr Gay, who removed a popular and proper rainbow crossing on Oxford Street, Sydney’s gay district, has praised the council, saying their “rainbow crossing … appropriately protects pedestrian safety”.

“I wholeheartedly congratulate Ashfield Council for putting a rainbow crossing precisely where we suggested City of Sydney Council install one,” he said.

The original crossing on Oxford Street near Taylor Square was temporarily painted in rainbow colours in February to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

But, in April, it was removed at night on orders from Mr Gay.
