P**y Riot Russian Colonies, Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, were convicted of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” in August for staging an anti-Putin protest in a Moscow cathedral. “Nadya Tolokonnikova has been sent to Mordovia, and Maria Alyokhina to Perm,” said Violetta Volkova, their defence lawyer.

The women, who both have small children, left for the camps on Saturday, but their fate was not known to their families until Monday when parcels sent to the Moscow prison were returned.

Perm and Mordovia prison camps, 870 and 400 miles away from Moscow, are part of the infamous archipelago of Stalin-era Russian gulags, described in harrowing detail by writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova will be housed in barracks with up to 100 women to each room – many of whom are likely to be convicted murderers and violent criminals.
