NASDAQ:FB, Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has built quite a reputation for itself as being very employee-centric and they are frequently lauded for the efforts that are made to cater to the whole welfare of employees. It therefore came as no surprise when plans were recently announced for the construction of a $120 million, 394-unit housing complex nearby its offices in Menlo Park, California. The property is a joint project between Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) and St. Anton Partners a California real estate developer and apparently is going to be called Anton Menlo.

The proposed development is different from the official residential campus which is planned for 2015 but is intended to provide a viable housing option for qualified employees. When completed, the housing complex is expected to have all the basic urban amenities from hairstylists to sports bars, laundry and dry cleaning facilities, do-it-yourself craft classes and even a place for employee pets. The one thing that is noticeably missing is any kind of day care for children.

Given the fact that Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) considers itself an industry leader in protecting women’s rights and actively tries to attract and retain female employees, the omission is very surprising. So many working parents struggle to find suitable day care options for their children under 5 years old and technology companies, like Google for example, have embraced the fact that providing child care services to employees benefits both staff and company equally. After all, a working parent is usually more creative and more productive when their child is well catered to and women do not have to quit working anymore simply because they have a child.

All things considered Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) does offer above-par benefits to its working parents and it is a distinct possibility that the absence of a day care for children at the new housing development is simply and oversight and is to be corrected before the project is completed.
