Melatonin Side Effects

          Melatonin is a widely used medicine that is recommended for the treatment of sleep disorders, It is isolated from beef cattles pineal glands and also synthesized by chemiscal compounds.

 Melatonin is not a approved by Food and Drug administration (FDA). FDA has warned the melatonin users that they don’t give assurance about the safety or beneficial effects of this drug.

Adverse Effects Of Melatonin

                               Generally melatonin interfares with the sleep cycle so it may show these sideeffects commonly. It includes:

  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Confusion
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Sleepwalking
  • Nightmares

Beside these side effects, melatonin is not considered safe in some conditions, it includes:

Pregnancy and Lactation:

              Generally Melatonin considered un safe in pregnancy so its use it avoided. It is thought that it may cause difficulty in pregnancy by interfering with the ovulation process.

 In Children:

              Its also considered unsafe for children.Melatonin is it self a hormone so it may effect on other hormones those are associated with development during adolescence.

In Diabetic Patients:

              Melatonin is not good for diabetic patients because it may cause increase in blood sugar level, so blood-sugar level monitoring is required if a diabetic patient is using melatonin.

Seizure disorders:

               In seizer disorders patients, melatonin use may increase the risk of seizures.

Depression:

               In people with depression, it may worsed this problem in these patients.

Seizur disorders:

               The risk of seizure is increased by its use so it is not recommended for seizure patients.

Melatonin Interaction with other Medications:

                   Melatonin is reported to generally interact with certain group of medicines such as sedative medicines or CNS depressents, they combinely cause too much sleepiness thats not good for a person. Some of these sedatives are Clonazepam, Phenobarbital, Zolpidem, Iorazepam etc.

                   Beside that its combination is avoided with:

                         Contraceptive drugs

                         Caffeine

                          Fluvoxamine

                          Anti-diabetic medicines

                          Immunosuppressants and

                          Anto-coagulants

                   Melatonin also has some side effects and drug interaction but still it is a drug of choice for sleeping disoorders because of its beneficial uses to overcome these diseas conditions.
