Hefner was born in Chicago, Illinois, the elder of two sons born to Grace Caroline (née Swanson; 1895–1997) and Glenn Lucius Hefner (1896–1976), both teachers. Hefner’s mother was of Swedish descent and his father had German and English ancestry.

On his father’s side, Hefner is a direct descendant of Plymouth governor William Bradford. He has described his family as “conservative, Midwest, Methodist.” He went to Sayre Elementary School and Steinmetz High School, then served as a writer for a military newspaper in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946.

He later graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign with a B.A. in psychology with a double minor in creative writing and art in 1949, earning his degree in two and a half years. After graduation, he took a semester of graduate courses in sociology at Northwestern University but dropped out soon after.

Hugh Hefner, Hugh Hefner has been hit by the Lindsay Lohan curse. Her much ballyhooed photo spread, for which he paid near $1 million, is being widely criticized and even one of his own, Playmate of the Year 2010 Hope Dworaczyk, has dissed it.

Lohan’s n*de photo shoot was supposed to mark a rebirth for his troubled magazine, and reverse a 42 percent circulation decline last year to 1.5 million from 2.6 million.

At first the photo shoot appeared to pay off with a huge wave of publicity. But then things started to go just like Lindsay life… horribly wrong.

First the cover of the magazine leaked over the Internet. Then, some Eastern European hacker got his hands on a copy of the magazine and posted her photos online. The multiplied on hundreds of sites.

The pictures were near universally panned, because of heavy airbrushing and Lohan’s modest poses.

Hefner unleashed his legal dogs to round up the copies with take down notices to Web sites, and he moved up the magazine’s publication.

Crystal Harris

Crystal Harris, (AP) – Play boy founder Hugh Hefner said he got involved again. Hefner said in a Twitter message earlier Sunday that he had given a ring girl and Playmate Crystal Harris, said she burst into tears.

“This is the best weekend in memory of Christmas,” he writes.

To dispel any confusion as to whether the ring was just a Christmas present later tweeted Hefner: “Yes, the ring I gave Crystal is an engagement ring that I did not make a mystery out him, a very Merry Christmas to all …”

This would be the third marriage for 84 years, the star of E! Reality series “The Girls Next Door,” which chronicles the lives Hefner at the Play boy Mansion. He divorced Playmate Kimberly Conrad last year.
