On Monday, a seismic event of magnitude 7.1 occurred in a remote area of the Pacific Ocean, in proximity to the Kermadec Islands, located approximately 560 miles northeast of New Zealand’s North Island. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 30 miles by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Fortunately, the incident did not appear to produce a tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The center confirmed that Hawaii and the wider Pacific were not at risk, and the possibility of a tsunami was limited to the immediate vicinity of the earthquake, where no adverse effects have been reported thus far.
