Sparks Middle School, Michael Landsberry, a math teacher at Sparks Middle School outside Reno, Nev., may be one of the fatalities in the shooting.

A Nevada student opened fire Monday at a middle school, seconds before the starting bell, wounding two boys and killing a staff member who was trying to protect other children, police said .

Twenty to 30 students watched while the unidentified gunman was shot dead. Authorities say no shots were fired by law enforcement. Police said between 150 and 200 officers, including some from as far as 60 miles away, responded to the shooting.

Authorities and bystanders stand outside Sparks Middle School in northern Nevada, where police have confirmed that two people are dead and two others are hospitalized after a shooting took place.
“In my estimation, he is a hero … We do know he was trying to intervene,” Reno Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson said about the fallen staff member.

The motive isn’t yet known. Names of the suspect and victims haven’t yet been released.
