November 14, 2013 by

Prince Harry Waxwork, According to the BBC, the prince departs for South Africa on Sunday with a flight on Tuesday to Antarctica.

“The group will spend time acclimatizing to the extreme cold and altitude before walking 208 miles (335 km),” the BBC reports. “As part of expedition training, Prince Harry, an Army pilot who has served in Afghanistan, spent a night in a sub-zero Army test facility in September.”

The prince, who is patron of Walking with the Wounded’s campaign, is making the journey to the Pole as part of a team of wounded British servicemen and women competing with other teams of wounded veterans from the United States and Commonwealth countries (including Canada). The teams will trek in extreme temperatures before reaching the South Pole by Dec. 17 in an effort to raise funds and awareness. Prince Harry will be competing in the arduous trek despite having recently suffered a broken toe.

The Mirror reports that funds will also be raised for military charities around the world, including Canada’s Solider On.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Alexander Skarsgard, known for his part in the hit series True Blood, will lead the American team and Dominic West, actor from The Wire, will lead the Commonwealth team.

Prince Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, met some of the trekkers earlier this week to wish them well. The prince’s website noted that when asked if she had ever been to Antarctica the Queen bristled.
