New York Times Account Stripped of Twitter Verification Badge
April 3, 2023 by staff
Twitter Removes New York Times’ Verified Badge: Twitter has removed the verified badge from the New York Times’ main account, making it one of the first major accounts to lose its coveted golden tick since the social media platform’s announcement that it would be removing not-paid-for verified badges from April 1st.

According to reports, Twitter CEO Elon Musk was responsible for the decision to remove the @nytimes badge, after learning that the publication had no plans to pay to keep the badge that was recently assigned to organization accounts.
While other accounts associated with the New York Times still have their verified badge, a spokesperson for the publication supported the decision, according to a statement given to Reuters.
