Heaven’s Gate 1981 Made $4M

Heaven’s Gate 1981 Made $4M, American movie fans love Adam Sandler — but he gets a terrible time from the critics. His recent comedy Jack and Jill was widely considered a new low. So much so that he received an unprecedented 10 Golden Raspberry awards at the 2012 Razzies.

The Razzies are a kind of anti-Oscars founded by John Wilson back in 1981, and dedicated to honouring the worst films and performances in a given year.

Sandler has featured prominently on the Razzie honour roll, but 2012 was a gala year for him, and in fairness Jack and Jill is a truly dreadful film.

A crude, crass and deeply unfunny comedy, it starred Sandler in the dual roles of a glib Hollywood producer and his overweight, flatulent female twin. It was embarrassing, and deserves all the Razzies going.

Jack and Jill may be among the worst films made in recent years, but it did respectably enough at the box office and could not be considered a truly spectacular flop.

It got me thinking about the real disasters, movies into which time, money and effort have been poured which emerge only to fall flat on their faces.

Films like Heaven’s Gate, a legendary disaster that all but ended its director’s career, and Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin, an absolute stinker that cost $125m to make and sank an entire franchise until Christopher Nolan revived it.

These are bad movies on an epic scale, and here are some of the very worst of them.
