Garth Brooks First Wife, In a candid interview, country music legend Garth Brooks has opened up to chat show host Ellen about his private life with wife Trisha Yearwood.
The Friends In Low Places singer gushed: ‘I’ve got to tell you, I never knew it could be like this. I never knew that every day you can wake up and feel like this. And I have God and I have Ms. Yearwood to thank.’
On The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Friday, November 29, Brooks revealed how he met Yearwood just 13 months after he married he first wife, college sweetheart, songwriter Sandy Mahl.
He said: ‘Alright. Here’s the strange thing. I can’t believe I’m really going to do this. Kit Blazey introduced me to Ms. Yearwood and he goes, “I knew you were going to like her,” and when she left, he goes “what did you think?” I said “well it’s strange, because I felt that feeling like when you just meet your wife, but I’ve been married for 13 months.”‘
Brooks married Sandy Mahl on May 24, 1986. He was a bouncer at a bar when they met. Brooks said he then met Yearwood in 1987, which he described as a conflicting experience: ‘So you being married, it’s got to be right. This is who you went to college with and you were married in front of God and your family and everything,’ he said. ‘You work, and you work, and you work, and then it comes to that time when you look at the rest of your life, going how do you want to live it?’
Brooks and Mahl separated in March 1999, announcing their plans to divorce on October 9, 2000, and filing for divorce on November 6, 2000. Struggling to balance his work and family life, Brooks officially retired from recording and performing in 2000. He began dating Yearwood shortly after the divorce, and made a partial comeback in 2005— that same year, they married.
‘This was somebody I always enjoyed being around, and we had a lot more in common than I ever dreamed we did. And so we started seeing each other after the divorce and we came off tour… And I’ve got to tell you if you like her and don’t know her you’ll love her. If you love her and don’t know her you’ll worship her. She’s the real deal.’
Their wedding marked the second marriage for Brooks and the third for Yearwood.
