Florida School Principal Resigns After Sixth-Graders were shown Michelangelo’s ‘David’ in Art Lesson, Principal fired after students shown David statue

March 25, 2023 by

A Florida school principal has stepped down from her position following allegations that parents were unhappy about their sixth-grade children seeing Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of David, a Biblical figure.

The Washington Post reported that Hope Carrasquilla, the principal of Tallahassee Classical School, was asked to resign during an emergency school board meeting. The Tallahassee Democrat was the first to break the news.

Although Carrasquilla was not informed of the reason for her dismissal, she believes it may be linked to a lesson about the nude marble statue taught to sixth-grade students.

In a letter to the school board, Carrasquilla expressed her sadness at leaving her role: “It is with a heavy heart that my time as the principal of Tallahassee Classical School has come to an end,” she wrote, according to the Post.

Carrasquilla said she was taken aback by the reaction she received from the school board, telling HuffPost that a letter intended for parents before the lesson was not sent due to miscommunications.
