ECO-NOVELTY COSMO BEADS BEAD INGESTED EXPANDS AND CAN CAUSE INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTIONS, Two toymakers are recalling water-absorbing beads that pose choking hazards to children if swallowed, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Eco-Novelty is recalling about 3,500 Cosmo Beads jumbo size colorful water balls and jumbo multipurpose colorful water balls because the water-absorbing beads can cause a serious ingestion hazard to a child.
No incidents or injuries have been reported. Eco-Novelty said it knows of one incident where an 8-month-old girl swallowed a similar water-absorbing polymer ball that had to be surgically removed.
The company said Tuesday that the water-absorbing polymer beads can look like candy to children. When swallowed, the beads can expand and cause intestinal obstructions inside a child’s body, resulting in severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration and possibly be life threatening.
The toys need surgery to be removed from the body. Similar toys have not shown up on x-rays.
Cosmo Beads jumbo size were sold as single packets of beads in various colors including clear, green, purple, red and mixed colors. Each packet contains a variety of bead sizes. Cosmo Beads jumbo multipurpose came in three packets per set. Each packet contains beads in one size and comes in clear, dark purple and orange colors.
The toys were sold at Amazon.com, ifleemarket.com and crystalsoilusa.com from June 2011 through August 2013 for between $2 and $20.

Separately, Be Amazing! Toys is recalling approximately 26,500 Monster Science Growing Spider toy sets because they contain water-absorbing polymer balls and pose the same ingestion hazard as Eco-Novelty’s Cosmo Beads.
No incidents or injuries have been reported.
The company said that the sets contain marble-sized polymer ball “spider eggs” that can absorb from 300 to 800 times their weight in water and can grow up to eight times their original size. The sets consist of one polymer spider and three “spider eggs”.
Sets with model number 7280 were sold at Cracker Barrel Old Country Stores from August 2011 to August 2013 and Spirit Halloween locations from August 2011 to November 2011 and from August 2012 to November 2012. Sets with model number 7289 were sold at Target from September 2012 to November 2012. The model number is on the bottom of the back of the packaging.
The sets were sold for between $3 and $5.

Be Amazing! Issued a similar recall in July for its Monster Science and Super Star Science colossal water balls. About 14,200 of the toys were recalled in the U.S. and 1,200 in Canada. No incidents or injuries were reported.
