Débat Prostitution, MEPs adopted on Friday night, the criminalization of clients of prostitutes, a key measure of the proposed law on prostitution. MPs voted by show of hands the most controversial provision of the text: one that punishes the purchase of sexual acts of 1500 euros fine. The text was actually fought by environmentalists. The proposal for comprehensive legislation will be voted on Wednesday.
Members, few have adopted the measure on the criminalization of prostitutes’ clients.
Protesters tried to make their voices heard.
MPs voted by a small committee, the criminalization of clients of prostitutes. This measure, symbol of prostitution law, punish the customers a fine 1,500 euros. In case of recidivism, the offense becomes a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of 3,750 euros in “the interests of education and deterrence, gradual and progressive,” according to an amendment passed. Alternative to fine or additional punishment, a “awareness course in the fight against the purchase of sexual acts” is expected.
Despite the reluctance of two UMP, Marie-Louise and Philippe Goujon Fort, MEPs repealed the offense of passive soliciting established by Nicolas Sarkozy that penalized prostitutes. They also voted for social support measures for those who want to leave prostitution, which will be powered by a fund of 20 million euros per year. Foreign involved in this “exit route” headed by an approved organization will be eligible for a residence of six months, renewable.
