Christmas Shopping

December 26, 2013 by

Christmas Shopping, The Christmas shopping rush is shifting into high gear, with big stores across the Tri-state keeping their doors open all day and into the night, hoping to give those last-minute shoppers some extra time.

Retailers are also wishing for a boost in sales, which have been lackluster so far this season.

Macy’s will be open to 6 p.m., Toys R Us until 9 p.m. and KMart until 10 p.m., as stores offer big discounts of as much as 50 percent to try and salvage the holiday season, which comprises up to 40 percent of their annual sales.

And this was a shorter shopping season than usual because Thanksgiving fell so late.

After a strong start to the season, sales at stores have fallen for three consecutive weeks. That puts a lot of pressure on retailers to get shoppers into stores in the final days of what’s typically the busiest shopping period of the year.

Sales at U.S. stores dropped 3.1 percent to $42.7 billion for the week that ended on Sunday compared with the same week last year, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 locations. That follows a decline of 2.9 percent and 0.8 percent during the first and second weeks of the month, respectively.
