Canadian Dies In Cuba, A Canadian man has died in a popular Cuban resort town. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who passed away,” said Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Chrystiane Roy.
“Canadian consular officials in Varadero, Cuba, are in contact with local authorities and stand ready to provide consular assistance to the family.”
Foreign Affairs did not say who the man was or how he died, but there are unconfirmed reports he is from Quebec.
Radio station 680 News reports he drowned.
The station learned of the death from vice-president of engineering at Rogers Radio, Kirk Nesbitt, who said he was on the beach Thursday when a man in the water “started waving his arms and we could hear him yelling.”
“The lifeguards did realize he was in trouble,” Nesbitt said. “Three of them went running into the water to go after him and the waves were quite high.”
Varadero, about 140 km east of Havana, is one of the Caribbean’s largest resort areas.
