1912 – Instigated by American cowboy Guy Weadick and underwritten by Calgary businessmen, the first Calgary Stampede is held.

1995 – British Nimrod plane plunges into Lake Ontario before horrified spectators during the annual air show at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto; seven RAF crew members killed.

1998 – Swissair Flight 111, en route from New York to Geneva, crashes off Peggy’s Cove, N.S., killing all 229 people on board.

1943 – NHL player and manger Glen Sather, considered instrumental in bringing Wayne Gretzky to the Edmonton Oilers, is born in High River, Alta.

1964 – Actor Keanu Reeves, who was raised in Winnipeg and went on to star in such memorable films as Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, is born in Beirut, Lebanon.
