Beloved Surfing Therapy Dog Ricochet Passes Away in Southern California

Ricochet, a beloved Golden Retriever who became a therapy dog by surfing, has passed away in Southern California. For over a decade, the 15-year-old dog brought therapy to numerous veterans and children by surfing in the waves off San Diego, as reported by her owner, Judy Fridono.

Last August, the dog was diagnosed with liver cancer, which led to her passing on Friday.
Initially trained as a service animal, Ricochet was more interested in chasing birds than helping with household tasks, as mentioned by Fridono.
However, in 2009, Ricochet discovered her true purpose when she rode a surfboard with quadriplegic surfer Patrick Ivison. The viral video of their ride amassed more than six million views.
Fridono recalled in a 2012 interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune, “That day she hopped on the board with Patrick, she was reborn. She kept running back to the water with her tail wagging like she could finally tell me, ‘This is what I want to do.'”
