2014 Silverado, General Motors Co. introduced a new lineup of pickup trucks Thursday betting that real truck buyers prize power over big numbers on the fuel economy label.

The redesigned versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks aimed at clawing back some of the customers and market share it lost to rival Ford Motor Co. and its F-series pickup trucks. The stakes are high since the profits on pickup trucks still pay the majority of the bills for the U.S. auto makers.

In an industry where conformity is the norm, the two pickup-truck titans have chosen two different paths. Ford believes it can use its F-series pickup trucks and engine technology to appeal to customers in the heavy, full and midsized markets.
