Yogi Berra:(NJ) — Among the players who have worn the famous Yankees pinstripes, Yogi Berra is the patriarch. Although he had his differences with the Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner, who died today at 80, and for a time distant from the Yankees organization because of a disagreement with Steinbrenner, in recent years Berra was again near Yankees and the manager.
Berra issued a statement today with his wife about Steinbrenner:
This is a very sad day for Carmen and me and all of baseball. My sympathies go out to the Steinbrenner family.
George was the boss, make no mistake. He built the Yankees champions and that’s something nobody can deny. He was very generous, caring, passionate. George and I had our differences, but who does not? We became great friends during the last decade and I really miss him.
