World Junior Championship

World Junior Championship, The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada’s contribution to Hockey Canada in support of the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship, which is being held in Calgary and Edmonton from December 26, 2011, to January 5, 2012.
“Our Government is a proud supporter of the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship, and we wish Team Canada great success,” said Minister of State Gosal. “We welcome all of the athletes and coaches from around the world to Alberta and to the pinnacle of junior hockey.”
The Government of Canada believes that participation in sport is part of a healthy lifestyle and contributes to a healthy society. Hosting international sport events gives Canada the opportunity to showcase our country to athletes and spectators from all over the world and brings significant sport, economic, and social benefits to Canadians and their communities.
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $250,000 was provided to Hockey Canada through Sport Canada’s Hosting Program. Sport Canada’s Sport Support Program is providing more than $3 million to Hockey Canada for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
