Witherspoon Devils Knot

Witherspoon Devils Knot, Reese Witherspoon will be making history. The 35-year-old actress has signed on for “Devil’s Knot,” director Atom Egoyan’s take on the West Memphis Three, the Wrap reported late Thursday.

The real-life case riveted the country since three suspects – Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley – were convicted in the “Satanic” 1993 killings of three 8-year-old Boy Scouts in an Arkansas border town.

The three men became known as “West Memphis 3″ after a pair of HBO documentaries, “Paradise Lost” and “Paradise Lost 2: Revelations,” detailed their controversial convictions, which were made with questionable evidence. A who’s who of Hollywood names — including Johnny Depp, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and “The Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson — championed their cause.

The three were freed after having their convictions overturned in August — after 18 years in prison.

“I firmly believe Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley are totally innocent,” Depp told CBS’ “48 Hours Mystery” before their release. “It was a need for swift justice to placate the community.”

Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh even helped fund Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley’s defense for the past few years.
