Willie Mays’ Birthday
May 6, 2011 by Post Team
Mays is arguably the greatest player of all-around game in history with 660 career home runs, a lifetime .302 batting average, 338 stolen bases and 12 Gold Gloves
The first 20,000 fans to the game tonight will have a mini replica of the statue of Willie Mays, located at the entrance to the stadium.
One of the greatest baseball players in history turned 80 on Friday. In honor of Willie Mays reach another milestone in his life; let’s take a look at what he did on the baseball field in his honor.
The Say Hey won the Rookie of the Year, two MVPs (and arguably, deserved at least three more), 12 Gold Gloves, two All-Star Game and World Series MVP.
He amassed over 3,000 hits, 2,000, 650 homers and finished with 1.903 RBI. He finished in the top six in MVP voting 12 times. He led the league at least one season in runs, hits, triples, homers, stolen bases, walks, batting average, on base percentage, slugging, total bases and had the top OPS five times. There’s more. I recommend looking at his Baseball Reference page and simply enjoy the greatness.
But you cannot define man of numbers. It was a personality that transcends baseball, providing the masses of fans with stories that are passed from generation to generation. Came into the league just four years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and the racial hatred they face every day that I cannot even imagine. The game is quite difficult to play without thinking that someone out there who want to kill you just for playing. And Willie excelled in the face of it, like so many other brave black players of the era.
Willie Mays has lived a life so full I cannot even pretend to be able to summarize with a bunch of numbers or words. Let’s wish him a happy 80th to sit and watch one of the most famous defensive plays in baseball history.
