“The World Cup 2010 is the 19th FIFA World Cup, the international association football tournament, held in South Africa, the first time the tournament finals have been staged in an African host country. South Africa was selected as host in May 2004, beating Morocco and Egypt in a bidding process open only to African nations. The World Cup is held every four years, the previous tournament held in Germany, while the end of 2014 will be hosted by Brazil.
The tournament is 736 players from 32 teams compete for the trophy of the World Cup games played in ten stadia across South Africa. The qualifying teams were selected through a qualification process which began in August 2007. With a group of 204 participants comprising 208 national teams in FIFA World Cup 2010 shares with the 2008 Olympic Games record for most nations competing in a sporting event.
The finals began on 11 June with the group stage, in which 32 teams played in the round-robin groups of four teams on points, with the two best teams in each procedure group. These 16 teams advanced to the next round will begin on June 26, at what stage the games after the time are resolved with more time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout, up to and including the World Cup final, scheduled for July 11 at Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg. The final will be contested by the Netherlands and Spain.
