Wayne Rooney Goal, Wayne Rooney settled the Manchester derby with a spectacular header after Manchester City had tried to move towards a share of the spoils at Old Trafford.

City had the better of the game, but trailed in the first half of opening Nani. EQ deflected David Silva looked as if she get at least a point until Rooney – put recent disappointments behind him – ended with a strike from Nani quite amazing to leave goalkeeper Joe Hart nailed to the spot and the United eight-point lead over their rivals with a game in hand.

United took the five minutes before halftime. Rooney just got in front of Joleon Lescott to achieve downfield Edwin van der SAR long punt and helped the ball to Ryan Giggs.

(CP) – Wayne Rooney hit a spectacular shot head for Manchester United beat rivals Manchester City 2-1 at Old Trafford and strengthen its hold atop the Premier League.

With his back to goal, the England striker Rooney has met a Nani cross from the right after 77 minutes with a shot perfectly timed right foot which flew into the top corner that the City goalkeeper Joe Hart stood motionless.

Asked if he was his best goal ever, Rooney told Sky Sports later “. I think so, yes I saw him come over and I thought why not nine times out of 10 they go in the booth? ”

United manager Alex Ferguson said he had never seen a better goal at Old Trafford.

“It was wonderful,” said Ferguson. “We had some fantastic goals here, but in terms of performance … you’ll never see this.”

Nani had given an advance of Man United 40th minute when he controlled Ryan Giggs pass for the first time before riding a finish past Hart confidence.

City drew level after 64 minutes when Shaun Wright-Phillips crossed for fellow substitute Edin Dzeko, whose shot went in the back of David Silva.

City deserved to be level with United, having more than held his own for most competitions.

Ferguson sprung a surprise before kick-off leaving the best striker Dimitar Berbatov on the bench and play Rooney up front on his own.

City counterpart Roberto Mancini also went to a lone striker in the former United forward Carlos Tevez and his side would have been ahead after just three minutes when Tevez played in Silva, who shot inches wide of the post far from its end, but tight angle.

Yaya Toure also threatened with a header off the post from a Gareth Barry free-kick, but by the half hour, Nani was beginning to exert its influence and a header from Darren Fletcher, Cross Giggs, forced Hart into his first save of the game with 33 minutes of play

Purpose of Nani, Rooney, after he had won an aerial challenge in midfield, sent United to halftime with a 1-0 lead, but the city has started the second half of the committed mode with Tevez run threatening and Silva, Tevez and again, shooting tamely at Edwin van der Sar.

Rooney, however, has the last word with only his fifth league goal of the season.
