Virginia Tech Shooting, Two people are dead and a gunman is on the loose at Virginia Tech university, the scene of the worst school shooting in US history. The offender opened fire on a policeman who had been carrying out a routine check, the university confirmed on its website earlier.

He then ran towards a towards a car park, where a second person was found dead soon after. The campus is in lockdown and people have been told to take shelter. “Shortly after noon today, a Virginia Tech police officer stopped a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall,” a statement says on the university’s website.

“During the traffic stop, the officer was shot and killed. There were witnesses to this shooting.

“Witnesses reported to police the shooter fled on foot heading toward the Cage, a parking lot near Duck Pond Drive. At that parking lot, a second person was found. That person is also deceased.

“Several law enforcement agencies have responded to assist. Virginia State Police has been requested to take lead in the investigation.

“The status of the shooter is unknown.”

Officials at the Blacksburg, Virginia school said the suspect was a white male wearing a maroon hooded sweatshirt and grey sweatpants and carrying a backpack.

‘He was covered in blood’

The incident has triggered a flood of reports of gunshots and suspicious activity on the campus, however officials say those reports are unfounded. A press conference will be held later today.
