Trader Joes, Newton store was evacuated in late morning after an elderly driver crashed into the building near a gas main, police said.

Nobody was injured in the woman, whose exact age was not immediately available, hit Trader Joe’s on Washington Street shortly before noon, Newton police officer Jeffrey Mace said.

The woman, who was shaken, was evaluated at the scene by emergency medical workers, but refused to be taken to the hospital, he said.

His car came to rest in the building near a gas main, firefighters then ordered the evacuation of all employees and customers while National Grid workers check a gas leak, he said.

The extent of damage to the building and the car were not immediately known. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
