Tour De France, How Wiggins crashed? What did he say? What is the diagnosis? Where does the team from now? What do you say to your team tonight? These are questions that were most likely turning in the minds of Sutton is also – and to be fair, questions to which no definitive answers yet.
But the “what ifs” and “hopefully” will begin to sink into the Morea, NSW born mastermind behind the recent British successes in cycling on the road and track, is convinced of one thing but Wiggins was on the cusp of showing their true potential and could come back stronger than ever next year.
Before the Tour lying 189 km eighth stage of Saturday Aigurande to Super-Besse Sancy, Sutton reveals his belief that the Australian Cadel Evans (BMC) was tested after the first week of being the leading rider in the Tour, and view that Evans is a serious contender to win.
Sutton should know. Evans has seen all year careers, especially in their last warm up event for the Tour – the seven stages Criterium du Dauphine in France, where Wiggins beat the former world champion for the win. Cadel”was the rider of the race so far,”said The Sun-Herald Sutton.
”I looked at the Dauphine … has qualities such clashes. It has set a good bike race so far. He has stayed out of trouble. And I think he’s looking really good, Cadel. It would be good to see him get a good result. I’m pretty sure he will because he is a real fighter.
Aussie’’you have blood on it, you know. I think there are a lot of people supporting him. He has been knocking on the door of the [Return] for a long time and I think that given time testing their ability, so if you can minimize your losses [in the Pyrenees and the Alps], then it will be a real competitor in Paris.”
Reference to Sutton testing time is a pointer to the penultimate stage and 20 of the Tour, a career 42.5 km individual time trial in the city of Grenoble.
However, Evans and his rivals, who no longer have Sky team and instead focus their attention on trying to win stages, you must first evaluate the final results of Saturday’s stage in Super-Besse Sancy, in Evans that began in the second place overall in the second to the Norwegian Thor Hushovd (Garmin-Cervelo) 1.
After a rest day on Monday after facing two mountain stages to make the visit of the Cantal to the Tarn before reaching the Pyrenees, on Thursday the first of three stages in the mountains bordering Spain.
Sutton believes that, thanks to Wiggins, the dynamics of the race is going to change in the next two weeks before the Tour ends in Paris on July 24.
He said that people were hoping would be a rival”real”de Wiggins this year and other teams that have been looking at the time it takes for the test of time-phased 20, and developing strategies around that.
