Time Out London Relaunch As Free Title, The title’s owner, Oakley Capital, expects the move to increase circulation from 50,000 to 300,000, in a bid to fight against an increasingly digital media marketplace. The group has recently launched an iPad app to sit alongside its mobile and online presence. The free publication, which will replace the £3.25 version, will be given away at London Underground stations, “major transport intersections within Zones one and two”.
The owner will also target Time Out readers “at key cultural institutions, arts venues, bars, cafes, boutiques and shops”, and aims to capture the success of London’s Standard newspaper, which adopted a free model in 2009.
“The Standard is an inspiration for us,” said Time Out project director Greg Miall. “It was a fantastic brand that everyone knew, they tweaked the editorial and it’s now a quality newspaper that everyone reads.”
He added that the free magazine will cut down on listings, reducing the number of pages to 72 from 124.
