The Nanny

November 28, 2010 by staff

The Nanny, After the FDA took initial steps to the liquor bancaffeinated state and national levels. Accordingly, the drink skyrocketed even further cult status.

The time Schumerannounced Representative Charles plans to get the drink started from New York, people seemed to race at every bodega in all boroughs, picking up cases of it, hoarding as illegal arms dealers. While riding the subway in New York on Thursday, I overheard two men in their early 20s talking about a friend who had a secret, and was a box office and 10. Even at a markup and 7, they seemed very interested in the pay.

Then, after the FDA suggests its own ban, fourlokoingredients the # hashtags Twitter emerged, the usurpation of hysteria with false formulas Four Loko recipe that included everything from babies to cocaine. Legalize Loko a website emerged, too, with the petition in support of FDA and T-shirts.

Four Loko has always had a certain appeal even if the name and insolent camo can design did not help its position among the revelers daring, the fact that it looks (and tastes sort of) like radiator fluid does. Even Brooklyn assemblyman Feliz Ortiz pulled a page playbook Morgan Spurlock and drank two and a half years Lokos Four in an hour, a doctor monitoring his blood pressure and alcohol all the time. He came out with a level of 0,185 alcohols and seemed kind of proud of him. But nothing is gaining popularity rapidly in American culture that illicit

Substance and it felt like an episode of today’s Boardwalk Empire, which takes place in real time.

In other words, the position of guardian of the FDA completely turned against him.

In a statement about the warning letters the FDA to four Loko and three other companies, Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein said, “FDA does not find support for the demand that the addition of caffeine in these beverages is “generally recognized as safe,” which is the legal standard. Instead, it is proved that the combination of caffeine and alcohol in these products pose a public health problem. ”

Loko announced it would dump its formula of caffeine to comply with federal requirements, but neither the FDA nor Schumer has not yet provided no scientific evidence to the contrary, ready to limit our freedoms as a preventive measure before sorting or not their claims are true. And, as many have pointed out, the mixture of caffeine and alcohol is a tradition that is manifested in everything from rum and cola for Red Bull and vodka – Four Loko kin. (If they expect to effectively regulate these drinks, too, expect an FDA flunkies displayed in your home 24 hours a day until you teetotaler pledge.)

For its part, Phusion, a small company based in Chicago, which manufactures Four Loko, the FDA responded to a statement on its website:

We have repeatedly stated – and still believe, as do many people across the country – the combination of alcohol and caffeine is safe. If it was dangerous, popular drinks like rum and coke or Irish coffee that have been consumed safely and responsibly for years would face the same scrutiny that our products have recently faced. In addition, if our products were dangerous we would not have expected the federal agency responsible for approving the forms of alcoholic beverages – the Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) – for approval. Yet, all our product formulas and packaging have been reviewed and approved by the APC before being offered to consumers. ”

The incidents that sparked the first fight Four Loko were indeed horrible, and with them came the dispute. More recently, in Florida, two separate cases are pending against the beverage company, including parents who reported their son accidentally shot himself after drinking for 30 hours straight, and a woman 20 years Orlando has lost his hand in a car accident after riding with a driver who was drunk off Four Loko. And in Maryland, the family of a 21 year old woman who crashed her car into a telephone pole is to blame his death on the fact that she drank two cans of four Loko before driving.
