The FTC Estimates That As Many As 9 Million Americans Have Their Identities Stolen Each Year., The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. Kent Memorial Library is offering a program to help avoid being a victim of identity theft.
Metta R. Delmore, a Kent attorney specializing in elder law, will present a one-night seminar titled “Protecting Yourself From Identity Theft” Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the library.
Identity theft occurs when someone uses your name, Social Security number or credit card number without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes.
It is the nation’s fastest-growing crime — and one that can do much damage to a person’s finances, credit and peace of mind.
Seniors are often a target for scams, because many do not understand the far-reaching range of the Internet and email.
This seminar is designed to help people of all ages and technological abilities prevent, detect and respond to identity theft. It is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
