The CW Vampire Diaries, This season on The CW shows, including “The Vampire Diaries” and “Gossip Girl” are coming to Hulu. The five-year contract announced Friday means the end of the year, the online video service will feature sample five of the six major networks – ABC, NBC, Fox, The CW, and Univision. The only holdout is CBS.
Under the new agreement, subscribers who pay and 8 a month for Hulu Plus get the five most recent episodes of The CW line is the day after they are broadcast on television. These episodes will be available for free on CWTV.com three days after issuance. Eight days after issuance, the episodes will be available in the free version of Hulu for computers.
All versions come with ads. But the episodes on Hulu and Hulu also have half of the burden of regular television ads, or two or three ads per break. CWTV.com will host shows that they have the same number as on television, or about four per break.
The deal is the latest move by Hulu to bulk up your library of content, as their owners – The Walt Disney Co., News Corp., Comcast Corp. and Providence Equity Partners – decided not to sell earlier this month.
Senior Vice Hulu content, Andy Forsell, said the offer will resonate with technology savvy audience The CW, which focuses on young women 18-34.
“Your audience is obviously a generation that is really comfortable online,” he said. “They are very comfortable coming and going.”
The CW sees the move as a way to capture revenues from new licenses, but also the viewers to see the debut broadcast on television.
“They can help drive viewers to the network and local stations that are broadcast our shows,” said Mark Pedowitz, president of The CW.
Place sample in the free version of Hulu eight days after the initial transmission is not unusual. Fox won the delay in their sample from August, but allowed a day after that access to subscribers of certain pay-TV subscribers.
Earlier this month, The CW also agreed to conduct all its previous seasons shows available to subscribers of Netflix Inc. ‘s streaming plan, which also costs and 8 a month. The episodes are no ads.
The CW is co-owned by CBS Corp. and Time Warner Inc. ‘s Warner Bros.
